The Cell

A child psychologist (Jennifer Lopez) experiments with virtual reality technology to treat comatose patients. Law enforcement asks her to use this treatment to access the mind of a serial killer who has fallen into a coma, hoping to coax the location of his latest victim out of him. Long-time music video and commercial director Tarsem Singh imbues his feature film debut with striking visual designs, drawing inspiration from artists like H.R. Giger and Damien Hirst. Free from the constraints of reality, his dream world is twisted, unhinged, and spellbinding. While the rest of Hollywood churns out sterile entertainment, Singh boldly disregards narrative conventions and pushes the confines of mainstream cinema.

M+ Cinema will present the latest 4K restoration of the film, completed in 2025.

About the Director

Tarsem Singh (b. 1961) directed award-winning music videos and commercials in the 1990s before moving into cinema. His first film, The Cell (2000), polarised critics and audiences for its bold style and unconventional plot. His next film The Fall (2006) was also praised for its unique aesthetics, but it failed to break into the mainstream market. In recent years, restorations of both films have renewed interest in Singh’s work.
