Viewing of ‘Jade Jadeite’ by Zhou Tao on M+ Facade
We invite M+ Members to join us for a ferry ride around the Victoria Harbour to see the premiere of moving image artist Zhou Tao’s new site-specific moving image work on the M+ Facade, commissioned by M+. The event includes a cocktail reception.
Jade Jadeite unfolds as a scroll of moving images set against a river landscape. Its rhythmic and playful title serves as a poetic allegory for Hong Kong, portraying it as a shining gem. In what appears to be a single continuous shot, Zhou Tao directs his lens from the western Pearl River region in Mainland China to Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour, ending at the M+ Facade. As the camera flows like the rivers it depicts, viewers are drawn into the fluid reality crafted by Zhou’s distinctive cinematic language. This vibrant portrait of community transcends the boundaries of time and space, inviting us to reconsider the limits of our visual experience acquired from the digital screens. Through an exploration of the camera’s limitations, Zhou’s otherworldly film challenges us to rethink the beauty found within its dysfunction.
To inaugurate Jade Jadeite, M+ Cinema will present a special screening of ‘Zhou Tao: Documenting Dreamscapes’ on 2 November 2024. Please purchase ticket separately.
