M+ Lars Nittve Keynote Lecture Series:
Imagining Museums of Modern Art with Glenn D. Lowry, Director of the Museum of Modern Art, New York
‘Imagining Museums of Modern Art’ builds upon two centuries of philosophies, strategies, and global perspectives to explore ways of presenting the art of our time. Theorist André Malraux’s musée imaginaire, a panoramic attempt to create an ideal museum, will serve as a point of departure to reconsider the idea of the art museum. As such, this talk will call for modern art museums to be understood in primarily conceptual terms as creative spaces that negotiate between abstract ideas and the concrete reality of works of art.
M+ Museum Director Suhanya Raffel will be joining the conversation with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) director Glenn D. Lowry. The free talk will be livestreamed via this page, Facebook, and YouTube. Simultaneous interpretation in Cantonese and Mandarin will be available. Click on ‘Register’ to sign up.
Supported by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Hong Kong, this event is part of the ‘M+ Lars Nittve Keynote Lecture Series’, which invites renowned artists and scholars to share insights on broader cultural ideas and topics.
About the Speakers
Glenn D. Lowry became the sixth director of the Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA) in 1995. He has overseen two building campaigns to expand MoMA’s galleries, quintupled its endowment, created an education and research center, and inspired a new model to present modern and contemporary art. Lowry has championed innovation, including growing annual visitation onsite and online and diversifying MoMA’s curatorial focus by adding a Media and Performance department and supporting new research through programs like Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives (C-MAP). Lowry is a strong advocate for contemporary art and artists and has lectured and written extensively on the role of museums in society.
Suhanya Raffel is the Museum Director of M+ in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District since her appointment in 2016. She leads M+ and oversees all museum activities, including acquisitions, programming, collections care, development, research, institutional collaborations, and museum operations. Since joining M+, Raffel has led the museum’s mission, broadening its international reach and championing its deep connection with its local community.
