Meet the Makers:
Off-Site Conversations and Tours—Chi Kee Sawmill & Timber

This event is for participants aged 16 or above.

The workshop ticket consists of two components: an off-site conversation and a guided tour at M+.

M+ will offer guided visits to the exhibition Making It Matters at designated timeslots. Tour schedule can be found here.

Chi Kee Sawmill & Timber is located in Kwu Tung, Sheung Shui in the New Territories. Chi Kee has operated since 1947 and is the only remaining sawmill in Hong Kong. The Sawmill used to be based in Java Road, North Point eventually settling in Sheung Shui in 1983 after several relocations. Located in an area under the Northern Metropolis Development Strategy, Chi Kee was demolished in the October of 2022 and have since relocated to a temporary site in Kwu Tung.

The conversation will be facilitated by Christine Lee, Curatorial Assistant, Design and Architecture, M+. The English session will be facilitated by Sunny Cheung, Curator, Design and Architecture, M+.

Participants should arrange for their own transportation to the programme venue.

About the Speaker

Wong Hung-kuen is the owner of Chi Kee Sawmill & Timber. He is active in organizing workshops and tours to promote the craft and wisdom of carpentry, with an emphasis on the relationship between human beings and the natural resource of wood.
