Ma Ke and Huishan Zhang in Conversation:
Fashion, Culture, and Identity
Ma Ke and Huishan Zhang in Conversation:
Fashion, Culture, and Identity
As a cultural and social practice, fashion has always had the power to communicate personal identity and belonging. Since the resurgence of the Chinese fashion industry in the 1980s and the gradual breakthrough of Chinese fashion on the international stage, sartorial references to Chinese culture have been evolving. Internationally acclaimed fashion designers Ma Ke and Huishan Zhang will be in conversation to discuss the influence of their cultural roots on their creative practice. They will also share their personal journey in establishing their practice and the meaning of expressing cultural identity in their work.
The conversation will be moderated by Tanja Hwang-Cunz, former Associate Curator of Design and Architecture at M+, and held in English and Mandarin. Simultaneous interpretation in Cantonese, English, and Mandarin will be available. Click on ‘Register’ to sign up for this free talk.
Tickets to the special exhibition, Madame Song: Pioneering Art and Fashion in China, are available for purchase here.
About the Speakers
Ma Ke and her practice center around traditional Chinese craftsmanship, its legacy, and innovation. She graduated from the Suzhou Institute of Silk Textile Technology (now the School of Art of Soochow University) in 1992, and her collection Terracotta Warriors was the winner of the second Brother Cup Chinese International Young Fashion Designers Contest in 1994. In 1996, Ma founded the first Chinese designer brand EXCEPTION de MIXMIND. After her departure from the brand in 2006, she established the brand and design studio WUYONG, becoming the first Chinese designer to present at Paris Haute Couture in 2008. In the same year, her work was nominated as one of the ‘Designs of the Year’ (now the ‘Beazley Designs of the Year’) by the London Design Museum. Ma was invited to participate in the China Pavilion at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016. Her works have been collected by the Victoria and Albert Museum and are currently on display at Madame Song: Pioneering Art and Fashion in China.
Chinese-born, London-based designer Huishan Zhang has mapped out his signature style, finding inspiration and direction through his national identity. During his studies at Central Saint Martins, Zhang was handpicked by Delphine Arnault to spend his third year working in the House of Dior in Paris. After graduation, he launched luxury brand HUISHAN ZHANG in London in 2012, with the atelier located in his hometown of Qingdao. The brand has a loyal following, with recent appearances on notable figures such as Gigi Hadid, Zhou Dongyu, Gemma Chan, Alexa Chung and Kate Hudson. Zhang was awarded the International Chinese Designer of the Year at the Elle China Style Awards in 2014 and was a nominee for the Vogue Fashion Fund in 2017. In 2014, he was named Business of Fashion’s BoF 500 as one of the people shaping the global fashion industry. Zhang’s work is in the collection of Victoria and Albert Museum and on display at Madame Song: Pioneering Art and Fashion in China.
