HKT x WESTK POPFEST:
M+ Live Cinema presents ‘Dragon’s Delusion–Paracusia’

M+ Live Cinema: Dragon's Delusion—Paracusia continues M+’s experimental approach in presenting interwoven experiences of moving image, sound, and live performance. Featuring the works of Hong Kong artist Kongkee and a live improvisational performance by the Freespace Ensemble, this new commission is part of the Live Cinema programme series presented by M+ since 2018.

According to Kongkee, sci-fi is not only a way for us to envision the future. Throughout history, the emergence of new technology has conflicted with the status quo. While emperors of the past pursued the elixir of immortality, in today’s world, we seek to extend our lifespan through science. Our senses are often overstimulated, making it difficult to escape from the constant barrage of electronic signals. The sci-fi genre is deeply rooted in how humans attempt to fulfil their desires through new technology. Kongkee’s Dragon’s Delusion series uses the past as an allegory to the present and explores our struggles in the face of technology, calling for a future that belongs to us.

This performance will bring together Kongkee’s motion comics, gifs, live drawing, and remixed animation backed by a musical ensemble of electric guitar, synthesizers, clarinet, guzheng, and percussion. From reimagining traditional Chinese instruments to thumping post-punk beats, this eclectic mix of musical talent is an exciting take on Kongkee’s sci-fi fantasy.

The Freespace Ensemble, featuring Bou Kwan-ying, Olivier Cong, Linus Fung, and Ho Yi-on, is led by Music Director Mike Yip.
