Ink | Pulse:
A Conversation with Chris Cheung (h0nh1m)

Join Hong Kong media artist Chris Cheung and M+ Curator of Moving Image Chanel Kong to discuss the brand-new live generative work Ink | Pulse, premiering on the M+ Facade on 30 June. A cross-disciplinary collaboration between Cheung and acclaimed Taiwanese calligraphy artist Tong Yang-Tze, it is the first dual-artist commission created specifically for the M+ Facade.

Ink | Pulse is inspired by and based on Tong Yang-Tze's Silent Music, a series of 100 ink pieces that were collected from Tong’s running and cursive scripts between 2003 and 2010 and which Tong has since used in expanding conversations around ink across multiple artistic disciplines. In this algorithm-driven commission, Cheung portrays Tong’s ink strokes as the heart-like vessel for cell division, blood circulation, and the nervous system, amplifying the conceptual and rhythmic resonance between the enduring quality of Tong’s ink practice and the ever-renewing nature of life.

Cheung will share insights on how his generative art practice figures in his appreciation of traditional ink calligraphy and how his conversations with Tong Yang-Tze informed the parameters of the algorithm he has created as part of this commission.

Following the talk, attendees are invited to participate in a demonstration of the algorithm in Ink | Pulse and to attend an outdoor viewing of the work on the M+ Facade (weather permitting).

This free talk will be held in Cantonese. Click on ‘Register’ to sign up.
