Hu Xiangqian’s Xiangqian Art Museum is an ongoing work in which the artist performs an imaginary museum collection through language and actions. The performance has been presented in numerous institutions around the world following its first presentation at Taikang Space in Beijing in 2010. For each edition, the artist ‘curates’ an exhibition of works selected from his fictional collection—many of the objects are actual artworks he encountered, but the collection also includes entirely invented works. This video documents the presentation of Xiangqian Art Museum at the Times Museum in Guangzhou. After introducing himself as the only member of staff, Hu energetically interprets each work through movement. This museum without physical objects reflects on how we keep a mental record of the things we encounter, and it also offers a wry comment on institutional collecting practices.
