WERK No. 19: CLUB 21 X COMME des GARÇONSWERK第19期:CLUB 21 × COMME des GARÇONS
2012
Chan founded his Singapore-based creative consultancy WORK in 1997, after working in advertising for a decade. WERK magazine, launched in 2000, is a self-published venture that grew out of his desire to experiment more freely with print production processes than he could in typical client projects. The nineteenth issue of WERK is a collaboration with the Japanese clothing label Comme des Garçons, published to celebrate Club 21’s new Comme des Garçons store in Singapore. Inspired by what Chan describes as ‘graffiti, punk, and junk’, the issue’s unique covers were hand glued and stencilled by an all-female creative team, introducing a high degree of variation into the typically uniform printing process. Building on the meaning of the name Comme des Garçons (‘like boys’, in French), the issue includes nine contributions by women artists in essays, photographs, and artwork in response to the prompt ‘what does it mean to be a woman in a man’s world?’ The covers caught the attention of Rei Kawakubo, the founder of Comme des Garçons, and she decided to reproduce the vibrant artwork on shirts and trousers in the Spring/Summer 2013 menswear collection.
With a small print run and a loose editorial mission of presenting the work of other designers and artists, WERK takes heavy inspiration from street art and the history of DIY graphics. Chan describes his design process as ‘organic’, unfolding without predetermined outcomes. Often incorporating recycled or handmade elements to create a multilayered, highly textured object, WERK draws attention to the sensory properties of printed matter.
