Christine Ay Tjoe’s work translates intimate feelings and personal memories into expressive strokes and complex compositions. In this painting, melancholy, fear, and joy are articulated in a clash of colours, and Ay Tjoe uses oil sticks to create strong, marks, revealing her gestures. On close examination, figural representations emerge on the canvas, depicting elements of human and animal forms such as hand, face, and claw. Christian narratives and spiritual concepts are a recurring theme in Ay Tjoe’s oeuvre. In naming the work We Are Getting Highly Overrated Because You’ve Never Known Us, the artist invites the viewer to a philosophical consideration of the value of human existence.
