In 1995, Yin Xiuzhen staged a performance in Chengdu. She made ice bricks with water from a contaminated river, piled them on the riverbank, and asked passersby to wash them clean. During the washing process, the ice would melt and return to the river. The act of washing ice bricks is inconsequential and futile, but it awakens the intimate ties between people and between people and nature.
Yin Xiuzhen (born 1963, Beijing) graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Capital Normal University, Beijing, in 1989. Her work explores globalisation and urbanisation. Yin lives and works in Beijing.
