In Waiting for a Friend (without Appointment), Hong Kong artist Pak Sheung Chuen stood in the busy Kowloon Tong underground rail station for almost four hours, until a friend happened to walk by. Pak greeted his friend, saying ‘I’ve been expecting you here for a long time!’ This performance, documented in photographs, introduces warmth and human connection to the anonymity and fast pace of city life. In his practice, Pak finds meaning in seemingly mundane conditions, events, and objects. He develops ideas and actions in subtle, often humorous ways to uncover connections and challenge the distinctions between public and private.
Waiting for a Friend (without Appointment) is a conceptual work that involves a premise, instructions, and an unplanned conclusion, providing space for the pleasure of a chance encounter with a friend during a busy day.
