The display of objects in vitrines has a long tradition in both European and Asian contexts. In European and North American natural history museums, these cases are conventionally used for stuffed and mounted animals or geological specimens. In Asia, decorative glass cases typically display ceramics, jewellery, and other treasured objects. The two approaches merge in Trevor Yeung’s vitrine. Three identical shells of Tibia fusus sea snails impale one another to form a delicate sculpture, playfully suggesting that three is better than two. The merging of two traditions to create a third way offers a new stability.
