The Passing 流逝

The Passing offers both an epic view of human experience and an intimate reflection on milestones in the artist’s own life, including the death of his mother and the birth of his son. Viola interweaves personal images of his family with shots of deserts, oceans, and other natural settings. He also inserts footage of himself sleeping and floating underwater to suggest states of consciousness between reality and dreams. Viola is known for creating immersive soundscapes that amplify the power of his distinctive visual language. Precisely edited sounds, such as heavy breathing and children’s laughter, accompany the images to help evoke abroad spectrum of human experience, from birth to death.
