This work depicts a tree on freshly dug soil, behind two large boulders. Plants grow out from the cracks of the boulder at right. Printed texts of different sizes and typefaces appear across the canvas. Since the early 2000s, Zheng Guogu has been slowly developing an agricultural area on the outskirts of Yangjiang, his hometown. Inspired by the Age of Empires series of video games, which involves building civilisations, the development was initially called Age of Empire and later renamed Liao Garden. It became his residence, his studio, an art project in itself, and the subject of several works. The landscape here is drawn from the construction of Age of Empire, and the inclusion of texts extends from his paintings in the early 2000s, which feature Chinese and English texts from magazines and comic strips.
Zheng Guogu (born 1970, Yangjiang) graduated from the Printmaking Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1992. A key member of the Yangjiang Group, he creates conceptual work in the form of photography, calligraphy, painting, and video installation. His work addresses the profound shifts of southern Chinese culture, specifically the Pearl River Delta region, with a particular focus on local culture in a time of globalisation. Zheng lives and works in Yangjiang.
