The Tatung TAC-6 rice cooker, released in Taiwan in 1960, is based on the design of the first automatic rice cooker, manufactured in Japan by Toshiba in 1955. Following Toshiba’s revolutionary success in the home appliance industry, Tatung received substantial technical assistance from the Japanese company as they fine-tuned their products. The TAC-6 became enduringly popular in Taiwan, not only for its durability and low price, but also for its ability to lend itself to steaming, boiling, stewing, and braising in local cuisine. It quickly assumed a position as a must-have appliance in Taiwanese homes. Unlike manufacturers who advanced the design and technology of their rice cookers, Tatung has retained the simple function and classic appearance of the TAC-6 model.
