This work is an interpretation of a historical photograph, representing a crucial moment in India’s struggle for independence in the 1930s and 1940s. The original photograph is part of the collection of the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum. It depicts Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s departure for London for the second Round Table Conference, to discuss reforms in India with the British government. Atul Dodiya presents a contemporary reading of the scene, including a golden graphic element taken from a notebook belonging to writer Rabindranath Tagore. The artist’s composition suggests a dialogue between the lives and ideas of Gandhi and Tagore, two icons of modern India. Dodiya incorporates a bird motif into the work as a symbol of freedom.
