Wang Tuo combines narrative and documentary modes of filmmaking to address the instability of class, identity, and relationships. Roleplay examines the white American middle class by manipulating conventions of popular cinema. Set in a stylish New York apartment, the video seems to document a real couple attending a therapy session. Yet, the people playing husband and wife were recruited from the internet and were strangers to each other prior to the filming. Wang’s filmmaking method is highly improvisational and relies on the actors’ ability to make use of their personal memories and lived experiences. Speaking about the film Wang questioned the limits of empathy in storytelling, asking, ‘what happens when no one understands what the subject of that fiction actually means because they have never experienced it?’ In posing such a question, Roleplay challenges our preconceived ideas of fiction and truth-telling.
