Noguchi did not invent the baby monitor. That distinction goes to Zenith Corporation, which hired the artist to design cases for what was essentially a two-way radio. Radio Nurse is a stern but reassuring head that combines inspiration from a nurse’s wimple and a kendo mask. It is perhaps the first truly irresistible packaging for consumer electronics, and it is also a clear example of Noguchi’s desire to push sculptural principles and quality—his ideas about how to shape space and standards for doing so—into daily life. Radio Nurse is accompanied by Guardian Ear, extending the anthropomorphism in concept, if not in form.
