In 1996, Tianhe, Guangzhou’s busiest commercial district, was in the middle of a skyscraper-construction boom. At a construction site, Liang Juhui installed a video-game console, a colour television set, and the Battle Cry game cartridge in the builders’ lift. The artist sat alone in the lift, playing the game intently for one hour. Over the course of the performance, the lift moved up and down the building. In the video documenting the performance, Liang highlights Guangzhou’s explosive urban growth by giving the audience a full, continuous view of the city. The panoramic view transforms the lift from a construction tool into a sightseeing vehicle. The game’s soundtrack, the lift’s low hum, and the sound of the city blend together, collapsing private and public spaces and illustrating the complex changes taking place in the Pearl River Delta region in the 1990s.
