Irene Chou studied painting formally after moving to Hong Kong from Shanghai, participating in the New Ink Movement led by Lui Shou-kwan. In addition to blending the methods of abstract expressionism and Taoist and Zen philosophies, her work often lays bare a range of emotions, from delicate to violent. Movement II is a representative work from the 1980s.The motion within the picture is achieved through a variety of techniques and compositional strategies. The bottom half, layered with a mixture of dry and wet ink, stands in contrast to the dotted patterns, whirlpool-like lines, dense white dots (top right), and a band of saturated red, resulting in a great sense of depth.
