Isamu Noguchi produced this work late in his career, with Gemini G.E.L., a highly regarded artists’ workshop and publisher of fine art prints based in Los Angeles. It is part of a series of editions he intended as a survey of the many techniques and strategies he had developed for expanding the definitions of sculpture. Long interested in creating space and volume from two-dimensional materials, Noguchi elected to work with galvanised steel plate, best known for its use in street furniture. He chose this humble industrial material with the intention of democratising art, demonstrating refinement and sophistication in the most unlikely places, and contemporising the history of sculpture.
