Lamp, Fragrant Hill Hotel, Beijing, China中國北京香山飯店檯燈
circa 1982
This lamp is an example of Pei’s vision manifesting in every aspect of the hotel’s design. It was Beijing Enamel Factory’s first attempt at cloisonné enamelling—a traditional technique that adds colour to metallic surfaces—in a modern object. Its bronze wiring creates a pattern that resembles the crackle glaze of Chinese ceramics. This detail also echoes the latticework around the hotel windows.
