Ink City is a short animation that addresses urban life in China. Made from around three hundred individual ink paintings, it echoes the energetic and episodic experience of moving through a busy city. Infrastructure, urban scenery, and various mundane moments appear in a quickly shifting sequence, supported by a soundtrack of ambient sound. Although occasional landmarks appear, much of the animation has an open, nonspecific quality. By rejecting conventions of linear storytelling in favour of a more impressionistic approach, the work encourages viewers to imagine their own narratives and connections between the images.
Ink City encapsulates Chen Shaoxiong’s long-held interest in the history and communicative potential of ink painting. Working from photographs to make the paintings of Ink City, Chen sought to unite the medium with newer technological forms, creating a hybrid work that can speak about contemporary subjects in a traditional language.
