In The Sky 空中的

2005

Since 2005, Qiu Anxiong has merged traditional ink painting with video to express contemporary concerns about mankind and the environment. In The Sky presents a melancholic narrative of a natural landscape affected by human civilisation. The soundtrack features Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from Tchaikovsky’s 1892 ballet The Nutcracker. Through depictions of aeroplane crashes, the destruction of plant life, and the transformation of the land with massive infrastructure projects, Qiu illuminates our unsustainable relationship with local ecologies and the irreversible damage brought about by industrial development.
