This painting shows two miners risking their lives while mining for copper with pneumatic drills. The painting’s composition is well-structured and, done in Romantic style to dramatise the heroic behaviour of the miners and conquer danger. This painting is inspired by Wu’s travels to Red Hill in Urumqi, where, as an official painter, he personally witnessed the perilous life of miners. It points to the unparalleled passion Wu shared with the miners, and also shows how the aesthetics and ideological guidelines of realist art were employed by the state.
