Kwok Mang-ho (also known as Frog King) has been experimenting with ink through out a career characterised by playful spontaneity. In this series, which began intheearly 1970s, the artist burns paper to create the effect of ink wash. The displayed works are visual representations of two classical ideas: Act of Quiet is inscribed with the Zen Buddhist idea of the perpetual inter-changeability of action and stillness of the mind; Fire Painting, Butterfly illustrates the insect born from metamorphosis and referencesTaoistsage ChuangTzu’s (c. 369–286 B.C.) well-known dream of himself as a butterfly. In both works, the paper is altered by fire, reflecting the processes of transformation and becoming. The illumination from behind heightens their texture, translucency, and mysterious, primitive aura.
