This abstract, monochromatic oil painting consists of four canvases joined together. White paint is applied to a horizontal section of the painting, and a strip of black is visible at the top and bottom. Towards the left, a large circular shape is painted with loose brushstrokes, and towards the right, a sliver of white appears beneath the layer of black paint. The painting is part of Zhang Jian-Jun’s Existence series, which addresses concepts of time and transformation. Zhang’s visual language, consisting of a largely monochromatic colour scheme and circular brushstrokes, reflects his study of classical Chinese paintings that emphasise simple shapes over complexity and colour. For Zhang, the act of painting is a dialogue with the universe and a meditation on purity and the essence of forms. Since the 1990s, Zhang has been further developing the themes of time and transformation through large-scale installations and performances, and he continues to explore the creation of traditional Chinese art forms in a contemporary context.
