Detail drawing of staircase stonework, Imperial Hotel (1916–1923), Tokyo, Japan日本東京帝國酒店(1916至1923年)樓梯石工詳圖
[circa 1918]
The grand scale of Tokyo’s Imperial Hotel and the appointment of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright to design the project demonstrate the client’s cosmopolitan ambition, in the context of Japan’s increasing power on the world stage. This construction drawing of a staircase shows Wright’s intricate ornamental design, which complemented an innovative structural system meant to withstand earthquakes. Upon learning about porous and fire-resistant oya stone found near Tokyo, Wright integrated the material into the designs. A short poem in Japanese characters at the right of the drawing provides an intimate reminder of Wright’s transnational collaboration with local architects.
