This comb was cast from the wreckage of a United States Air Force F-105 fighter-bomber. The aeroplane was shot down by Chinese anti-aircraft artillery in 1967, when troops from the People’s Liberation Army were sent to aid the Vietnamese People’s Army in the war with the United States. Carved in the shape of a plane, the comb is engraved with the phrase ‘Aid Vietnam against the United States’. It describes the enemy as a ‘paper tiger’—outwardly powerful but inwardly weak. The object expresses its maker’s sense of optimism in defeating the Americans and securing communist rule in Vietnam.
