China After Mao—Display Official Portraits of Chairman Mao and Chairman Hua at Mao Portrait Studio, Shanghai 毛以後的中國──上海,展示毛主席和華主席的肖像
1977
This photograph depicts two men holding framed portraits of Mao Zedong and Hua Guofeng. The work is part of photojournalist Liu Heung-Shing’s China after Mao series, consisting of photographs taken between 1976 and 1983. The series bears witness to the transformations in China after the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) and documents significant events from the period. When Hua Guofeng briefly succeeded Mao Zedong as the Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party upon Mao’s death in late 1976, preparations were made for identically sized portraits of Mao and Hua to be hung in classrooms across China. Here, Liu captures a scene where portraits of Mao and Hua are being prepared.
Liu Heung Shing (born 1951, Hong Kong) graduated from Hunter College of The City University of New York in 1975. A former foreign correspondent and photojournalist for Time and the Associated Press, Liu was posted to China, the United States, Korea, India, and the former Soviet Union between 1976 and 1988. As a photojournalist, he documents daily life. Liu lives and works in Beijing.
