The title of this work refers to a well-known fable about an ethereal utopia often depicted in Chinese ink painting. For this temporary garden installation, Yangjiang Group transformed calligraphy texts and xuan paper into a three-dimensional sculptural work that also comprises fake peach trees, a wax waterfall, and electronic devices. This meditative space subverts traditional methods of presenting calligraphy, reinventing the form through modern materials. Yangjiang Group’s practice, which incorporates calligraphy into installations and performances, defies easy categorisation. The collective—founded by Zheng Guogu, Chen Zaiyan, and Sun Qinglin in 2002—is especially interested in challenging the notion of calligraphy as high culture by using it in advertising campaigns and on gambling receipts.
