This brochure is part of the graphic identity for Progress Hong Kong, a showcase exhibition mounted by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council in 1975. The branding was developed by Henry Steiner, one of the most influential graphic designers in Hong Kong. Beginning in the 1960s, Steiner pioneered what he called ‘cross-cultural design’, combining Asian and Euro-American aesthetics, compositions, and typography in a manner that retained the cultural characteristics of each. He created logos for a number of corporate and governmental clients, including HSBC and the Hong Kong Jockey Club. For Progress Hong Kong, Steiner achieved a cohesive typographic identity that worked at a number of scales and across media. The title of the event is rendered in a bold sans-serif font skewed at a thirty-degree angle, juxtaposed with the smaller, horizontal Chinese characters, to create a dynamic composition. The letterforms jump out from the black background in high contrast with the surrounding negative space. As Hong Kong’s economy and global presence increased in the second half of the twentieth century, Steiner was a key figure in demonstrating the value of creative branding and design.
