On a trip to Japan in 1950, artist and designer Isamu Noguchi met industrial designer Kenmochi Isamu. Kenmochi was working at the Industrial Arts Research Institute—a government-funded organisation that aimed to develop and improve craft industries for export. Noguchi became interested in Kenmochi’s experimental furniture designs and use of traditional basket-weaving techniques. He took a sculptural approach to this chair, embracing the tactility and graphical elements of woven bamboo for seating and using an iron rod to form the legs and supporting structure. The chair was initially intended to be mass-produced as part of Noguchi’s strategy to bring art and design into modern life.
