In this abstract work, the artist applied oil paint to the canvas with a palette knife, producing segments of vibrant colours defined by staggered lines. The ochre foundation and the deep-red upper portion suggest the earth and illuminated sky. A thick black stretch, brightened by a small, red square in the centre, representing the sun, divides the canvas horizontally. A published poet and novelist, Etel Adnan turned to painting as a different form of expression and contemplation, one that is more personal and introspective. Her intuitive use of vivid paints defines her landscape paintings of deserts, mountains, and coastlines. The landscapes of her environments are great inspirations for her work. Arizona is one of Adnan’s earliest paintings and was inspired by her travels along the West Coast of the United States, when she was teaching in northern California. Mount Tamalpais in California would become a recurring subject in her later paintings, which are smaller, use a lighter colour palette, and feature geometric shapes. Adnan’s visual work also encompasses tapestry design, watercolour paintings, and artist books.
