Inspired by Wong Kar-wai’s film In the Mood for Love (2000), Angkor Quartet depicts a fictional musical foursome with the film’s two lead characters, played by Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung, on guitar at the centre, flanked by singer Rebecca Pan on drums and Wong Karwai on xylophone. They are shown playing the film’s theme song, ‘Quizas, Quizas, Quizas’. Set in 1962 and steeped in nostalgia, Wong’s film captures a period in Hong Kong’s past when the city acted as a crucial hub for trade with and migration to Southeast Asia, and when places such as Singapore and Cambodia seemed to be not far-off locales but fluid extensions of the territory. Shieh’s addition of the Hôtel d’Angkor insignia underscores this relationship and makes reference to the final scene of In the Mood for Love, filmed outside Hong Kong, at Angkor Wat, Cambodia.
