Imagine sitting on a cushion filled with fatty meat. Now imagine its texture and smell as it slowly decomposes and rots over time. When this work was conceived for and first displayed in the Fuck Off exhibition in Shanghai in November 2000, visitors could sit on the chair and have this sensory experience. The idea that the work changes over time is a core part of its message, showing that art does not need to be beautiful and timeless to make an impact.
In this version, the meat has been replaced with a synthetic substitute, and to preserve the piece in its current form, visitors are no longer able to take a seat on the chair. The artist has also assigned a new title to the work in honour of M+’s grand opening.
