Wong Kar Wai (b. 1958, Shanghai) immigrated to Hong Kong when he was five. Upon graduation from then-Hong Kong Polytechnic, he enrolled in TVB’s training programme and later worked as a television screenwriter. He directed As Tears Go By (1988), recognised as one of the most promising directorial debuts at the time. In the 1990s, he directed acclaimed features one after another, including Days of Being Wild (1990) and Chungking Express (1994). His works have competed at Cannes, including Happy Together (1997), which won him Best Director; In the Mood for Love (2000); and My Blueberry Nights (2007).
