Tanin Industrial Company Ephemera 塔寧實業有限公司短期印刷品

This fonds consists of four advertisements of transistor radio related to Tanin Industrial Company (Tanin). Tanin was the first Thai company to produce electric appliances including radio, television, fan, et cetera., with a focus on radio at the beginning. The company not only manufactured its own radio models, but also imported foreign radio brands such as ‘Blaupunkt’ (German based) and ‘Silver’ (Japanese based) to Thailand.

The company was officially established in Bangkok by Udom Wittayasirinant in 1963 while the business with radio practically began in 1946. Wittayasirinant co-founded a radio shop with his friend in Samphanthawong district to sell and repair radios. It had expanded to be a radio operator under the brand ’Silver’ to promote the business. In 1956, the brand ‘Tanin’ was created. With the effort paid in importing foreign radio brands, he was sponsored by ‘Blaupunkt’ to visit its transistor radio production line in Germany. He began experimenting with radios manufacturing after he returned to Thailand and set up a radio factory later in 1963.The factory aimed at producing more user-friendly and affordable transistor radios for the Thai.

The transistor radios were manufactured with excellent quality, highlighted the success of the company. It was claimed that it did not emphasise on design improvements heavily, but the quality. The products were outstanding in receiving amplitude modulation (AM) wave compared with the imported radios. The imported radios were manufactured with the AM waves tuned according to general international principles, which the landforms are different all over the world. This increased the interference in the AM wave transmission. Tanin’s radios were made to serve both urban and rural areas in Thailand with distraction free. Most of the materials were produced by the factory domestically to suit the tropical climate in the beginning. Tanin later imported certain components from overseas, mainly Japan and developed the co-brand ‘Tanin Silver’ to further improve the quality of products. The slogan ‘Every Baht is Worth with Tanin’ revealed the company’s confidence in the exceptional quality of transistor radios made for Thailand.
