Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (PERNAS), a Malaysian government-owned corporation established in 1969, commissioned Architects Team 3 to design its thirty-seven-storey headquarters in 1980. PERNAS and its multiple subsidiary businesses—in industries including mining and resource extraction, engineering, and insurance—exemplify the rapidly expanding, globally oriented economy of post-independence Malaysia. Located near the City Hall building in central Kuala Lumpur, the octagonal office tower was demolished after a 2014 fire.

Like Architects Team 3’s United Overseas Bank headquarters in Singapore and Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak in Penang, the PERNAS tower’s prismatic form reads consistently from all directions. The firm had by this time become committed to this form for Architects Team 3’s projects for high-rises. Rounded columns define the corners of the concrete structure, also known as Menara Tun Razak (after the country’s development-minded second prime minister). Each side is faced in a regular rhythm of horizontal spandrels and slightly recessed, dark glass–panelled windows. A one-level open-air space encircles the tower’s midsection, while another multi-storey, glass-clad shaded zone marks its base.
