Photographic material, house for Dr Arthur FH Aeria (1964), Cantonment Avenue, Penang, Malaysia 馬來西亞檳城廣東民道 Arthur FH Aeria 醫生住宅(1964年)影像資料

The Malayan Architects Co-partnership designed this house for a doctor in George Town, Penang, in the early 1960s. Along with several other early houses designed by the firm, the project is representative of efforts to adapt European-American modernism to local climates and materials, and to the lifestyles of an emerging class of professionals. It received an ‘Ideal Homes’ award from the Federation of Malaya Society of Architects in 1966.

The house’s plan reads as a composition of intersecting, thin vertical planes, which together define several rectangular volumes and a partially covered courtyard. A few light-coloured, load-bearing brick walls extend beyond the home’s flat roof; two of these frame a shaded car park and main entrance. Around the perimeter, strips of brick are set off perpendicularly to the infilled glass-and-timber facade, supporting the extended roof and carving out additional zones protected from the sun. Construction details—for example, where these brick walls meet the roof—are left visible, emphasising raw materials and the methods that bring them together.

This series consists of a set of exterior and interior photographs, giving detailed views of the garden and some of the interior furnishings.
This series is part of the Malayan Architects Co-Partnership projects.
