Photographic and printed material, City Hall (1956–1962), Hong Kong 香港大會堂(1956至1962年)影像及印刷資料

Hong Kong’s City Hall is a complex of civic buildings consisting of a concert hall, a theatre, a ballroom and banquet hall, a garden, and a tower that houses offices, display spaces, conference and lecture rooms, libraries, and a museum and art gallery. The garden has a reflecting pool, landscaped trees and shrubs, and a memorial honouring those who defended Hong Kong during the Second World War.

Planning for the City Hall building, which was a public project designed by Alan Fitch and Ron J. Philips, began in 1947 in an effort to revive the city’s cultural life and economy in the aftermath of the war. Completed in 1962, the building was designed in the modernist style and replaced a neoclassical civic center that had been demolished more than a decade earlier. The buildings make use of concrete, granite, glass, and blue enamelled brick. Fitch and Phillips designed many of the complex’s interior finishes, including furniture and the carpet in the entrance hall.

This series consists of a set of photographs showing the interior, and two publications reporting on the construction of the building.
This series is part of the Alan Fitch Project Archives.
