Pei Cobb Freed Collection of Documentation related to I. M. Pei 貝考弗藏品中與貝聿銘相關的文獻

This fonds consists of over 200 items of printed material from the mid- to late 20th century — journals covering interviews of and projects by I. M. Pei, as well as ephemera published by the architectural firm Pei had partnership with, I. M. Pei & Partners (which later renamed Pei Cobb Freed & Partners). Apart from his works in the United States, Pei gained further recognition by participating in projects across regions, such as the Louvre Pyramid that unexpectedly sparked controversies during its early phases, and the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, few of the skyscrapers that he designed.

Pei was featured on the cover stories in some journal issues. Many times, his works were mentioned in journals of his field, such as Architectural Record, Progressive Architecture, etc. Projects with enriching material are the National Gallery of Art East Building (1968–1978) in Washington D.C., The Bank of China Tower (1982–1989) in Hong Kong, and The Louvre Pyramid (1983–1989) in Paris. Several reprints of extracts on built projects can also be found. Besides, leaflets published by the organisations which occupied the buildings he designed were also collected. Focusing on third-party material, this archive will provide insight into the critiques followed by his fame at the peak of his career and Pei himself in the public eye.

This collection was acquired by M+ in 2023. M+ is committed to the preservation and to the arrangement and description of the Archive to the highest international standards. As sections of the archive are catalogued, they will be made available on the M+ Collections website.
