Ohashi Teruaki Archive 大橋晃朗作品檔案

The archive includes around 200 drawings and sketches by Japanese furniture designer Ohashi Teruaki (1938-1992) made between 1966 and 1990. Ohashi’s drawings and sketches can be divided roughly into three types: architectural and furniture construction drawings, ink design drawings, and coloured sketches. The drawings were made for different purposes, but all show Ohashi’s distinct, poetic style. Perhaps the most notable are the ink design drawings, which were primarily made for publication and hence most clearly convey his design intention. Sometimes, Ohashi overlaid up to 50 reproduced drawings of the same chair to capture the sense of movement and graphic character of his furniture designs.

This collection includes drawings from the period between 1962 and 1969 when Ohashi worked for the architect Kazuo Shinohara, known for his formation of the Shinohara School. This collection includes almost the entire known archive of Ohashi’s drawings and sketches, previously kept at Tokyo Zokei University, where Ohashi was a professor until his death in 1992.

The Ohashi Teruaki Archive was donated by the family of Ohashi Teruaki in 2018. M+ is committed to the preservation and to the arrangement and description of the Ohashi Teruaki Archive to the highest international standards. As sections of the archive are catalogued, they will be made available on the M+ Collections website.
This archive is being catalogued. Information will be released periodically.
