House of Tai Ping Archive 太平地氈檔案

In 1956, the House of Tai Ping was established in Hong Kong and has since become a globally recognized producer of high-end carpets. The company was founded by a group of businesspeople from Hong Kong and the United States, including Lawrence Kadoorie, Horace Kadoorie, Y. C. Wang, H. C. Yung, Tse Koong Kai, Linden E. Johnson, and Allen H. Rabin. Initially, Tai Ping operated a workshop in Tuen Mun, New Territories, and later erected a factory in Tai Po in 1960. Tai Ping's showrooms were established across Hong Kong, England, France, and Germany. The company distributed its Tai Ping brand, which means great peace in Chinese, to Asia, Europe, the United States, and the Middle East. Tai Ping carpets can be found in public and private spaces such as hotel lobbies, grand halls, and palaces.

House of Tai Ping Archive consists of primary documentation in design and carpet industry. The materials include sketches, samples, photographs and brochures of Tai Ping’s products, and photographs of its final installation and its Showrooms. Few publications by the company also entered this archive. The contents of this archive offer a depiction of the company's past, particularly during significant periods such as the post-war economic boom in Hong Kong, the ascent and descent of the city's industry, and the transformation of its economy during 1970s and 1980s.

The House of Tai Ping Archive was donated by the company in 2019. M+ is committed to the preservation and to the arrangement and description of the Archive to the highest international standards. As sections of the archive are catalogued, they will be made available on the M+ Collections website.
