Graphic Atelier/Patrick Chung Ephemera 鍾培正/恆美商業設計有限公司短期印刷品

The Graphic Atelier/Patrick Chung Ephemera comprises 8 objects of ephemera, including letterheads, brochures and promotional brochure.

Patrick Chung is one of the key figures who established the graphic design profession in Hong Kong. Upon returning to Hong Kong from Germany in 1966, Chung founded his graphic design practice Everbest Atelier in under the umbrella of his father’s printing company Everbest Printing Co., Ltd. to provide ‘modern commercial graphic designs in printing field’. Chung’s Bauhaus-influenced training is in evidence with a focus on clean layout, juxtaposition of contrasting forms and Herbert Bayer-esque typography.

The visual identity that Chung designed for interior designer Fanta Yuen is visible on the envelope, letterhead, and contract stationery within the ephemera; both this logo and Graphic Atelier's logo reveal Chung's awareness of Optic Art, a style of abstraction popular in the 1960s that creates optical illusions through juxtaposing geometric shapes, lines, and colours.

The ‘Letterhead, Electric Aktiengesellschaft’ could be a work Chung did when he was still studying in Germany, whereas the ‘Letterhead, Everbest Printing Co., Ltd.’ and ‘Quotation Letterhead, Graphic Atelier Ltd.’ were designed for his two companies’ practical day-to-day use. The incomplete ‘Promotional Portfolio, Graphic Associates International Limited’ contains a set of loose pages that highlight the different specialty practices of the consultancy. The ‘Invitation and Exhibition Booklet’ were designed by Charles Ng for the Feather in a HK Designer’s Cap: a Tribute to Patrick Chung & Graphic Atelier exhibition organised by the Hong Kong Designers Association in 1996.

The Graphic Atelier/Patrick Chung Ephemera is the gift of Kai Tai Keung in 2017. Kan Tai-keung, the lead designer of this publication, joined Graphic Atelier in 1968 and would rise to become its Art Director during his eight years of engagement there, as from 1972, with the Graphic Atelier design team grown considerably since its establishment in 1966, founder Patrick Chung focused on the consultancy’s business development while supervising the work of his team of designers.
