Graduate House is a dormitory, student centre, and public conference facility at the University of Hong Kong realised by Rocco Design Architects in the mid-1990s. Anchoring a southwestern corner of the campus, the building bridges the leafy hills of Lung Fu Shan Country Park and the city below.
The residences—188 single and 9 double rooms for postgraduate students—occupy two thin slabs joined by a service core and glass-fronted wedge. Angled towards each other at one end and varied in height, the slabs are arranged to maximise solar insulation and provide urban views from both towers. Inside, a shared lounge on every other floor promotes collective life. The towers’ base meets a three-storey horizontal structure that contains lecture theatres, seminar rooms, and circulation spaces.
The project’s sensitive, hybrid approach to urban and natural conditions is most evident at ground level. A landscaped, terraced staircase along the project’s eastern edge funnels pedestrians close to the building, reinforcing Graduate House’s role as connective campus tissue. The vegetation along the curved road is left dense, tucking the building into the dramatic slope of its site.
