Drawings, Bamboo Wing (2009), Vinhphuc, Vietnam 越南永福省竹之翼(2009年)繪圖

The Ho Chi Minh City–based firm Vo Trong Nghia Architects designed Bamboo Wing in Vinh Phuc province, near Hanoi, in 2009. The semicircular all-bamboo structure is part of a complex of buildings that includes a restaurant and event space.

Visitors reach the intricate ‘wing’, which is set within an artificial pond, by stepping across a series of white rectangular stones. The twelve-metre-wide tilted roof is supported by thick bundles of bamboo, which branch upward in two arcing segments to meet both its edges. Wires stretch from the roof to the water to secure the structure in place. Dining furniture lines the spaces on each side of the bamboo columns, the tops of the tables even with the water of the surrounding pool.

Like the firm’s 2006 Wind and Water Cafe, which combines bamboo with steel, Bamboo Wing is passively ventilated, its angle calibrated to retain cool air. The structure’s curve frames a view of both the trees that dot the pond and the wider landscape. In its intensive use of an ecological building material found widely throughout Vietnam, the project carefully orchestrates a new natural setting.

This series consists of sections and detail drawings of the structure.
