Drawings and photographic materials, Oriental Hotel (now Mandarin Oriental) (1973–1976), Bang Rak, Bangkok, Thailand 泰國曼谷挽叻縣東方酒店(現文華東方酒店)(1973至1976年)繪圖及影像資料
This series consists of sixty-one drawings, seven transparencies, and a negative for the expansion project of Oriental Hotel Bangkok (now Mandarin Oriental). The project was started in 1973 and completed in 1976. The newly constructed buildings are located at the north and east of the original buildings in Bang Rak, Bangkok.
The original building, named Oriental Hotel, was established in 1876 as the first hotel in Thailand. In 1973, the Mandarin International Hotels Limited acquired a 49 percent interest in the Oriental Hotel as an intention to expand into Asia market. The two hotels, Oriental Hotel and The Mandarin were combined to form the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in 1985. With the grand reputation of the Oriental Hotel, it kept its original name for a long time. Until 2008, the name was officially changed to Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok.
The expansion of Oriental Hotel Bangkok consists of four blocks of buildings, including the new tower, lobby, ballroom, and five storeys parking garage. These four blocks link together through the basement, ground floor, and the first floor. The new tower with the name River Wing has fifteen storeys and a basement while the rooms and suites are located at the third to fifteenth floors. Every guest room is designed to feature a forty-five-degree floor-to-ceiling window that can overlook the Chao Phraya River.
The transparencies show the exterior views of the River Wing, Garden Wing, Authors' Wing, and the lobby. There was a signboard with the scripts 'Oriental Hotel' in Thai on the upper part of the west of River Wing. The scripts were replaced by 'Mandarin Oriental' in English later in 2008, when the hotel was renamed.
