Drawings and photographic materials, Connaught Centre Footbridge (1970–1978), Central, Hong Kong 香港中環康樂大廈天橋(1970至1978年)繪圖及影像資料
This series consists of eighty-two drawings and fourteen transparencies for the Connaught Centre Footbridge project in Central, with forty-six drawings related with the construction of the footbridge, and the remaining thirty-six related with the cladding.
The footbridge, initiated by Hongkong Land Limited, was constructed from 1970 to 1978. It was built over Connaught Road to facilitate pedestrian access between Connaught Place (now Jardine House), Swire House (now Chater House after redevelopment) and the General Post Office.
The Hong Kong Government extended the footbridge to Exchange Square, upon completion of the new building complex in 1985. The cladding of the extension is shown on the thirty-six drawings.
Part of the drawings related with the Union House interior, including restaurant, coffee shop, bar, and arcade, were by the design firm Don Ashton Design Consultants Limited. As a remark, the Union House was re-constructed from 1958 to 1962, renamed as Swire House in 1976 and demolished in 1998. Chater House was then built on the site of former Swire House in 2002.
Fourteen transparencies show the exterior views of Connaught Road elevated walkway, and Connaught Centre Footbridge during and after construction. Hong Kong City Hall, Edinburgh Place, Connaught Centre, and the Victoria Harbour in 1970s are shown up in the images as well.
